Community Mentoring Program
Become a mentor in the Community Mentoring Program and have some fun! For a small commitment of only 2-4 hours a week, you can hang out with a child that needs a mentor. There are always children in Moose Jaw waiting for a mentor, so we encourage you to apply today. After the enrollment process, we’ll provide training and match you with a mentee, who shares your interests. It’s up to you and your mentee to decide when to get together, and what you do! You could go hiking, biking, play video games, watch a movie, listen to music, or cook! Children are always willing to try new activities and learn new skills. Come up with a list, and try new things together!
A small commitment can make a BIG difference. Each Volunteer Mentor commits to mentoring a child once a week for 2-4 hours for a minimum of one year. More often than not matches are having so much fun that they continue even after the one year mark. Currently, the average length for a match is 2.5 years. Not only does volunteering benefit the child but the volunteers as well. Studies show that 81% of volunteers mentoring children are more optimistic about their lives.
Mentees are great kids anxiously waiting to have fun with someone like you. Their ages range from 6 to 16, and all are excited to be a part of this program. If you’ve ever wanted to be a kid again, your mentee will be happy to help you out. That’s the magic of the program – you learn from each other. Children who spend time with a mentor gain confidence, acquire new skills and competencies and develop an enhanced capacity to care for others. Mentors experience a sense of discovery and enjoyment as they see the world of possibility open up through a child’s eye.
